Masterclass: ‘Recovering Contested Pasts: historiography and historical memory of the Australian frontier’

1 May 2019, 10am-1pm, Institute of Advanced Studies, UWA.

An IAS masterclass with Amanda Nettelbeck, Professor in History, University of Adelaide, and 2019 Tom Stannage Fellow. In this masterclass, Amanda Nettelbeck reflects upon how the history of Australia’s colonial frontiers has evolved since the ground-breaking work of the 1980s and, more recently, since the ‘History Wars’ of the late 1990s/early 2000s. Drawing especially upon the Australian experience but of relevance to scholars of other contested histories, the masterclass will encourage a discussion about historical method, the complicated nature of historical ‘truth-telling’, and the relationship between history and social change. Free with prior registration; all welcome.
