Congratulations to Andrew Beattie for the publication of Allied Internment Camps in Occupied Germany: Extrajudicial Detention in the Name of Denazification, 1945–1950 (Cambridge University Press, 2020). This study of the internment of over 400,000 Germans by the American, British, French, and Soviet occupiers of Germany at the end of WWII asks who was interned, how they were treated, and when and why they were released. It confirms the incomparably appalling conditions and death rates in the Soviet camps, but identifies similarities in many other respects.
