AHA Newsletter 4: 10 March 2009 Cold War Dossier A SURVEY FOR THE AUSTRALIAN LEARNING AND TEACHING COUNCIL (FORMERLY CARRICK INSTITUTE) PROJECT INTO EDUCATIONAL TOURISM IN THE AUSTRALIAN CONTEXT The project team has recently released the consultation paper based on the findings of the project work to date and we are now inviting feedback from our academic colleagues. As you will note in the report, in the next phase of the research, the project team will be calling for expressions of interest to explore the future of academic engagement with Australian tour companies. CONFERENCE WRITING THE EMPIRE: SCRIBBLINGS FROM BELOW An international & interdisciplinary conference University of Bristol, 24–26 June 2010 Call for papers Over the last few decades, the study of texts has increasingly occupied centre-stage within the study of empires. Scholars from a host of disciplines have explored the representations of peoples and places in travel writing, novels and a wide variety of other textual forms. The written word has thus been acknowledged as a key technology of power. While considerable attention has been paid to the ways in which gender shaped such texts, less attention has been paid to other forms of difference and inequality. This interdisciplinary conference seeks to address this gap by exploring how less powerful and less privileged actors in colonial and post-colonial societies made use of the written word. We also invite papers on their performance, including, in particular, the politics of performance in colonial and metropolitan streetscapes. Possible themes for papers & panels include:

SSGM PACIFIC ISLANDS PHD SCHOLARSHIP The State, Society and Governance in Melanesia Program (SSGM) offers a PhD scholarship for a citizen of one of the Pacific Island Countries. The aim of this scholarship is to provide an opportunity for a keen and talented scholar from the Pacific region to work on topics of interest to the SSGM under one of the following three broad areas,
Information about the State Society and Governance Program and potential supervisors can be found at: http://rspas.anu.edu.au/melanesia/staff.php The successful applicant will be enrolled as a fulltime PhD candidate with the SSGM Program, which is situated within the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific. The scholarship will be available for a term of three years and will carry a tax-exempt annual stipend of AUD $20,427 (2009 rate). Essential criteria: Applicants must have a good honours degree or a masters degree in politics, law, history, political economy, development studies, geography, economics, anthropology, sociology or a related area. Desirable criteria: Previous fieldwork and research experience and/or policy experience in the Pacific. Other Benefits: Full tuition fee; fieldwork support, travel to Canberra from outside Australia; basic health insurance; establishment allowance; contribution to visa expenses. These benefits are for the scholar as the Program is not able to provide assistance for dependents. How to apply: In the first instance, applicants should submit an expression of interest together with a 150-250 word research proposal, and a curriculum vitae or a list of your academic qualifications and work experience.
