Closure of some Archives

Further to our previous correspondence regarding the closure of certain NAA offices, please note:

This motion just passed without a vote i.e. the government supported the motion *614 Leader of the Australian Greens (Senator Bob Brown) and Senator Hanson-Young: To move:

–That the Senate–

    (a) does not support the non-consultative process which has led to the closures of the Tasmanian, South Australian and Northern Territory offices of the National Archives of Australia;

    (b) recognises:

      (i) the disadvantages that will be faced by researchers, organisations and the general public as a result of the office closures, and

      (ii) that the number of reading room visits has remained steady over the past 5 years despite an increase in online requests and viewing; and

    (c) calls on the Government to reverse the decision to close the three offices to ensure all Australians have access to the archive collection in their state or territory.

Macquarie 2010 Bicentenary Commemorations Endorsement Program

On the 1st January 1810, Lachlan Macquarie was sworn in as the fifth Governor of the colony of New South Wales. The 200th anniversary will be commemorated with a statewide celebration program to acknowledge the significant contribution and achievements of Governor Macquarie and his wife Elizabeth during their twelve year tenure.

The Macquarie 2010 Bicentenary Commemorations Committee was established to coordinate the State Government's involvement in the Bicentenary. The Committee's vision is that the Bicentenary will be commemorated as an important milestone in our nation's history which enriches our knowledge of the past and inspires our vision for the future.

The Committee is encouraging state and local government agencies, community organisations, businesses and individuals to be part of the commemorations by organising a new activity or reorganising an existing event under the 'Macquarie' theme and applying for endorsement.

The Endorsement Program provides an opportunity for initiatives to be part of the calendar of events listed on the official website. Endorsees will also gain permission to use the logo; and be given access to online resources and opportunities to expand the potential audience for their Bicentenary activities.

The official calendar will be an historical record of how the Bicentenary was commemorated – so why not register your initiative and be part of history!

For more information and to apply for endorsement please visit the website or contact the Community Engagement and Events Division at the NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet on 9228 4513 or email.
