Closure of National Archives' Offices

There have been several messages about the proposed closure of some National Archives' Offices from concerned historians. Below is a message from AHA President, Martyn Lyons.

The Australian Historical Association has very recently received news of the planned closure of the National Archives’ offices in Darwin, Hobart and Adelaide over the next two and a half years.

In my view, this move may disadvantage researchers in those areas, and may cause distress to postgraduate research students in those centres.

In addition, the planned removal of Northern Territory documents to Sydney will effectively deprive local Aboriginal communities of access to documents which concern them. This matter is of serious concern to us as historians as well as to associated organisations such as the Professional Historians’ Association.

In my opinion, our main aim should be to ask for assurances about continuing access for local researchers to documents once the offices are closed.

If you share these concerns, I am now inviting you to express them by e-mailing the Director of the National Archives,
Ross Gibbs.
