National Archives' Access Policy

Further to David Carment's note in Newsletter 21, Pam Oliver writes:

I rang my Reference Officer at NAA in ACT about the warning David gave about re registration. There is also one additional change to the access policy that people should be aware of. If a record is OWE [Open with exception] on Record Search, it now must go back to Access and Examination for further assessment before it is issued to a reader. If anyone is wanting to view OWE files, they need to order them months in advance of needing to read them. Until about three months ago, such files were just issued to readers as OPEN files are and within the same time frame. This has changed. This is particularly important for people travelling interstate to NAA repositories. I only found out myself three weeks before an interstate trip and may not be able to see all of the files I wish to.

A Woman's War

A Woman's War takes us into the life of a mother during the Great War. It provides a unique and intimate perspective of how she and other women of her inner-city, working class community endured an incredibly difficult period of Australia's history.
A remarkable story…I heartily endorse the book as means of raising awareness of the chronological events of WW1.
    Dame Elisabeth Murdoch

As there are so few books written about war from the point of view of women, this timely and wide ranging record is going to contribute greatly to the long neglected female perspective on wars, invariably started by men.
    Dr Jonathan King (Military Historian)

I would thoroughly recommend it to be read in Secondary Schools and by all women…and I will be passing it to my daughters and granddaughters to read.
Joan Spence OAM (President, RSL Womens' Council)
