Memorial Scholarship and Obituary

Trish (Patricia) Crawford
BA (Hons) Melb; MA, Ph.D. UWA, Fellow of the Australian Academy of the Humanities, Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia, Chancellor's Medal recipient (2007)

For over forty years Trish Crawford has been a brilliant researcher and teacher in the fields of early modern history, women's history and WA history. She served the university and her discipline with internationally recognised distinction during those years. She authored (or edited) eleven books and innumerable articles. She has also been an outstanding role model, mentor, colleague and friend to staff and students at The University of Western Australia, and indeed throughout the Australian academic community.

Always a fighter for equality, she has been a tireless advocate and supporter of Women's Studies, and women students and academics. UWA's high standing as an Equal Opportunity employer owes much to her efforts.

Trish died peacefully at home on 28th April after a courageous battle with cancer. To honour her and to set up an appropriate and lasting memorial in accordance with the wishes of her family, we are establishing the Trish (Patricia) Crawford Memorial Fund in The Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at The University of Western Australia. The aim of this fund is to provide support for the research of an outstanding postgraduate, postdoctoral staff member or Early Career Researcher in history.

You are invited to donate to the Trish Crawford Fund. All contributions over $2 are tax deductible. A donation form is attached. Please print, complete and return to The Office of Development, The University of Western Australia, 35 Stirling Highway, Crawley, WS 6009, Australia or fax to (61) 8 6488 1063.

Donations can also be made online.

It is not our intention to make further contact, but please don't hesitate to call Cheryl Mariner on (61) 8 6488 1688 or 0438 920 641 if you wish to discuss any aspect of the fund.

Heritage Amendment Bill 2009

On 13 May 2009, the Minister for Planning, Kristina Keneally announced the Heritage Amendment Bill 2009, which if passed will significantly impact the heritage assessment process in NSW. The amendments will mean that there is no guarantee an historian will be represented on the Heritage Council, the body will assesses heritage significance. Positions on this body, previously nominated by community organisations will now be ministerially appointed, bringing into question the objectivity of this body. In addition the amendment bill shifts the balance of power in favour of the Minister for Planning.

For a detailed Executive Summary of the changes tabled and a link to the Minister's speech go to http://www.historycouncilnsw.org.au/heritage.htm

The amendment bill will be discussed this week in parliament. We urge all AHA members to write to their local member as well as the Minister for Planning, Kristina Keneally, the Shadow Minister for Planning, Brad Hazzard, and the Premier expressing your concern.

Heritage Projects (Jobs Fund) – Apply now!

Minister Peter Garrett recently announced that $60 million had been allocated for Heritage projects under the Jobs Programme section of the Economic Stimulus Package. As part of this $60 million, the Federation of Australian Historical Societies has urged that $10 million be allocated as a small grants programme aimed at community organisations such as historical and heritage societies and historical museums. This has now been agreed to and the small grants will be between $20,000 and $100,000 each. Applications have now been called – see the Department of Environment, Water, Heritage and Arts website.

Please note, the Application Form and Guidelines were designed for a wide range of programmes, including projects costing millions of dollars. They are therefore very long and complicated. You should fill in as much as you can, but not every section will be essential. Do not be put off; this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to get a grant for a substantial project. It is worth a special effort! The Department welcomes calls on 1800 653 004 – you may save yourself a bit of time by ringing to discuss your project first. Good luck!!

Contact: heritagegrants@environment.gov.au or 1800 653 004

Applications close: 12 June 2009
