Main=20 theme: =E2=80=9CFinancial Crises: Historical = Perspectives=E2=80=9D

Call for Papers

Papers and proposals for sessions are = invited=20 for the 2010 APEBH conference. Although the main conference theme is = =E2=80=98Financial=20 Crises: Historical Perspectives=E2=80=99 we also extend a welcome to = contributions on=20 any other topics in economic, social, and business history, as well as = to=20 proposals for sessions on particular themes.

Researchers across a range of = disciplines are=20 warmly welcomed including economists and historians of economic thought, = accounting, business, society, and management, as well as archivists. = Early=20 career researchers are encouraged to participate. The conference = organisers are=20 particularly interested in attracting papers that examine developments = within=20 the Asia-Pacific region broadly defined and/or papers that provide an=20 international comparative perspective, but by no means wish to = discourage papers=20 on other regions of the world.

The current global financial crisis = raises many=20 questions that invite historical comparison. What are the similarities = and=20 differences between this and previous financial and economic crises, = including=20 the depression of the 1930s and the Asian crisis of the late 1990s? To = what=20 extent are financial crises inevitable, or can they be avoided by sound = banking=20 practices and economic policy? What could today=E2=80=99s policy makers = and business=20 leaders learn from previous eras of financial turmoil? How did financial = regulation change in response to past episodes of crisis and with what=20 consequences? How do financial crises affect different types of economy = and=20 different groups in society? Can we expect to see the revival of = Keynesian and=20 other doctrines that rose to popularity in the 1930s? Why are some = businesses=20 more vulnerable to the impact of national and international financial = crises=20 than others? Do crises lead to opportunities for astute entrepreneurs? = Are there=20 historical precedents for a financial crisis caused by the growth of new = instruments and new institutions that were not formally included in = existing=20 regulatory regimes and, if so, how did regulators respond? These = questions could=20 be approached from a number of perspectives, including those of the=20 cliometrician, the economic historian, the economic theorist, the = business=20 historian, and the social historian. There is scope for new = interpretations as=20 well as syntheses of existing work.

Paper abstracts of one page may be = submitted at=20 any time up to 30 November 2009. A decision on = proposals will=20 be made within a month of submission. Session proposals of one page may = be=20 submitted up to the same date, outlining the main objectives of the=20 session.

You are not obliged to submit your = full paper=20 for refereeing. However, some universities require staff attending = conferences=20 to have their papers refereed, and if this is the case in your = institution=20 please submit the full paper by 11 January 2010, = earlier if=20 possible.

Any papers sent to us by 12 = February=20 2010 will be posted on the conference website.

A conference paper prize will be = awarded. A=20 selection of papers (subject to the normal reviewing process and = standards) may=20 be published in the Australian Economic History Review.
