Penny Russell studied at Monash and Melbourne Universities before taking up a position at the University of Sydney, where she is now Associate Professor in History. She is currently co-editor, with Richard White, of History Australia, the journal of the Australian Historical Association. Her research ranges across Australian colonial history, with a particular focus on gender, status, manners and power, and includes interests in transnational biography and British travel and exploration. She has published widely in Australian and international journals and is the author of A Wish of Distinction (1994) and This Errant Lady (2002).
